More About PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) Treatments

A PRP treatment involves the collection of blood (approximately 18 ml), which is then spun down, by using a centrifuge, to separate the plasma from the red blood cells. The plasma is further separated into Platelet- Rich Plasma (PRP) and Platelet-Poor Plasma (PPP).

  • Scalp/Hair Rejuvenation

Platelet-Rich Plasma is rich in Growth Factors and is injected back into the scalp to stimulate cell renewal, the formation of new vascular supply thereby “watering the follicles”, and new collagen production.  Other Growth Factors, that stimulate hydration and regeneration of the dermis, are also injected into the scalp during the process. Reduced blood supply is one of the causes of hair loss and therefore stimulation of vascular supply is an important focus. PRP can be performed over the entire scalp or can be focused on areas of concern.

You should not have a PRP treatment if you have Cancer or dermatological diseases affecting the skin (i.e., Porphyria) or if you are being treated with Chemotherapy. Drugs, such as Aspirin, Nurofen, Voltaren, Diclofenac, Naproxen, St John’s Wort, Garlic, Omega-3, or Anti-coagulant therapy will lead to more bruising, which will last longer. If you are on Anti-coagulant therapy, you can discuss the option of a short medication-free period and a milder treatment (i.e., a more superficial PRP needling treatment) with your practitioner. You should also not have a Platelet-Rich Plasma treatment if you had Steroid treatment within 4 weeks of your treatment or whilst you are being treated with Roaccutane/Oratane.

The PRP is injected into the scalp with a multi-injector, which ensures a quick and tolerable treatment. You will likely experience mild to moderate swelling of the treated area. This will last for approximately 12-24 hours. Ice or cold compresses can be applied 1 hour after your treatment to reduce swelling if required. Your scalp may feel sensitive or tender for the first 24 hours. In rare cases, an infection may occur, which is easily treated with antibiotics. Results will vary between individuals, due to the natural variation in the quality of PRP. A course of 4-6 sessions may be needed to obtain the desired outcome, although no results can be guaranteed. Intervals are 2 to 4 weeks. The stimulation of the scalp through Platelet-Rich Plasma treatments is not permanent, as tissues continue to age, and therefore maintenance sessions will be needed.

You will likely experience mild to moderate swelling of the treated area (-s). This will last for approximately
12- 24 hours. A soothing mask can be applied after your treatment to reduce swelling (discuss this with
your practitioner). The skin may feel sensitive or tender for the first 24 hours. In rare cases, an infection may
occur, which is easily treated with antibiotics.

Platelet-Rich-Plasma (PRP) Micro-needling: A Micro-needling device is used to create hundreds of
micro-channels. The PRP is constantly massaged into these channels. Due to the fact that
bleeding does not need to be elicited in order to release platelets, the micro-needling can be
performed very superficially. This only gives rise to slight redness, swelling, and tenderness for up to
24 hours.

Platelet-Rich-Plasma (PRP) Skin Boosting: A Multi-Injector needle (with 5 needles) is used to inject
small droplets of PRP into the skin. In some cases, higher doses can be injected over areas of
concern. Fine, red spots & mild swelling can last up to 48 hours. Bruising can last up to 7 days.

Platelet-Rich-Plasma (PRP) with a Cannula: This is used for a more focused treatment to target
problem areas such as the eyes, top lip, or chin area. This can be used on its own or in
combination with either PRP Micro-needling or PRP Skin boosting. Minimal swelling and bruising
can be expected.

  • Female Intimate PRP

Women increasingly suffer from vaginal dryness, urinary incontinence, and sometimes, a lowered libido as they age. PRP can be injected into the vagina and vulva with numerous benefits.

This treatment uses PRP (platelet-rich plasma), harvested from your own blood. Platelet-rich plasma contains concentrated growth factors, with varying functions, which can enhance repair, and regeneration as well as improve blood circulation. The platelet-rich plasma is injected into the tissues surrounding the urethra, into the vagina, clitoris, and vulva.

Besides treating vaginal dryness and urinary incontinence, the treatment also stimulates tissue growth and improves the health of your sexual organs, thus contributing to a better orgasm.

During your session, blood is taken from a vein and centrifuged (spun) to separate red blood cells from the platelet-rich plasma. The Aesthetic Practitioner will numb the vaginal and clitoral regions with numbing cream and localised anaesthetic injections. 1 ml of the spun PRP is injected into your clitoral glans. The remaining 5 ml are injected under the vaginal mucosa around the G-spot area. The treatment is quick, with minimal discomfort.

  • Benefits of this treatment include:
    • Improved libido and sexual desire
    • Heightened orgasms due to increased vaginal and clitoral sensitivity
    • Decreased urinary incontinence
    • Improved vaginal lubrication
    • Reduced pain during intercourse
    • Regeneration and repair of the skin of the vulva
    • Alleviation of lichen sclerosis of the vulva

(Lichen sclerosis is a condition where the skin of the vulva is atrophic and itchy). Sexual function improvements have been estimated in 75-95% of women within days after the treatment, most women report a noticeable improvement in their sexual arousal and orgasm intensity. Further improvement develops over a course of 3 months.

The effects of the treatment last for approximately 1 year. Maintenance sessions will be required and the intervals of these sessions will vary from person to person.  You should discuss this with your Aesthetic Practitioner.

PRP is harvested from your own blood and, therefore, side effects are limited.  You can experience some discomfort and tenderness following your treatment.  The treated areas will appear red and swollen for up to 3 days. Contact your medical practitioner if the redness or tenderness continues for longer, in order to exclude a localised infection or abscess.

The hair count and density of hair almost doubled (C&D) following PRP treatment compared to baseline (A&B)

A&B:  The epidermal thickness and the number of hair follicles at baseline.
D&E:  A marked increase in epidermal thickness and the number of hair follicles in hair skin following PRP treatment.
A:  Hair skin epidermis before PRP treatment
B:  Hair follicles before PRP treatment
D:  Proliferation of the epidermis of hair skin following PRP treatment
E:  Proliferation of the hair follicles following PRP treatment
